In 2020, I helped to start a local news organization. Wee! It's been a wild ride so far, and we hope to work collaboratively with others to improve our local media ecosystem. Check out our mission and work below.

Our Mission

The Land (www.thelandcle.org) is a local news startup that reports on Cleveland’s neighborhoods and inner ring suburbs. We deliver in-depth stories that foster accountability, inform the community, and inspire people to take action.

What We Do

In  2021, The Land’s focus will be:

  • Using our voices to tell our community’s stories and examine our greatest challenges;
  • Reporting on efforts to address job creation, development and social equity in the city of Cleveland;
  • Building a newsroom and publication that look like the community we serve.

We’ll use the following programs to achieve these goals:

On-the-ground reporting

  1. We are dedicated to strengthening our city by publishing balanced, well-researched news.
  2. We are committed to diversity, equity and inclusion in our newsroom and our coverage.
  3. We focus on accountability and solutions journalism.

Civic engagement

  1. We cover public meetings to help inform and engage the community.
  2. Our stories are in-depth and offer resources for getting involved.
  3. We follow up to make sure important issues don’t slide out of public view.

Collaboration

  1. We work with the Northeast Ohio Solutions Journalism Collaborative (NEOSOJO) on stories about how marginalized communities are being affected by Covid-19.
  2. We encourage other media to “steal our stories” as long as they credit The Land.
  3. We share stories from other media organizations across the city.

Lee, our mutual friend Earl Pike made me aware of what you have been doing with your blog. Here is a recent Facebook post of mine:
My friends Diana Tittle (former editor of Northern Ohio Live and author of many books, including “Welcome to Heights High” and “The Severances”) and Tom Hinson (long-time curator and now Curator Emeritus of the Cleveland Museum of Art) moved to New Mexico several years ago. In “retirement,” they have become energetic and effective advocates for progressive causes and the Democratic Party in New Mexico, especially in Sierra County. Troubled by the threats to local journalism and investigative reporting there (and across the nation), Diana became Editor of The Sierra County Sun, a non-profit-organization devoted to public-interest journalism. Its mission statement states: “The Sierra County Sun is a leading provider of fact-based, credibly sourced, independent, original reporting on local government and public affairs in Sierra County, New Mexico.” I have a blog that I use to keep track of my reading and share excerpts and links. Diana recently offered me the opportunity to adapt this blog into a Reader at Large column in the Sun, for which I am grateful. If you share Diana’s belief, as I do, that the decline of local, public-interest journalism and the threats to its survival are among the things imperiling our democracy, I encourage you to visit the Sierra County Sun website (www.sierracountysun.org) and support the efforts of Diana and her colleagues with a donation. My current column appears under the Culture link. Thanks.
